Speaking Sample: - Topic: Names

1. Does your name have any special meaning?

Sample answer: I don’t think there is any special meaning for my name. My grandpa picked this character from an ancient dictionary based on the time I was born.

2. How would you choose names for your next generation?

Sample answer: I’m not sure. Maybe I will name my child after someone I admire. For example, I think Henry Ford is a great man, so I might name my son Henry. But I still need inputs from my significant other before making the final decision.

3. Are there any differences between how Vietnamese name their children now and in the past?

Sample answer: I think the naming method remains almost the same, you know, looking up in the dictionary to find characters that convey positive meaning. What does change though is the characters that parents prefer. For example, names of baby boomers often include characters which mean “nation”, “construction” because back then the new China was just founded, parents wanted their children to contribute to the development of the new country. Then in the 80s and 90s, many millennials were named after their parents’ favorite character from the novels they read. I’m not sure what popular characters are these days, but it seems there is more diversity and creativity than in the past.

4. Does anyone in your family have the same name as you?

No, that doesn’t happen for Chinese names. Unlike in western cultures, kids are often named after their family members like their grandparents or uncles, aunts, we Chinese don’t do that. In China, it’ll be pretty awkward to call your child the same name as your parents or grandparents.

5. Is it easy for you to remember people’s names?

Sample: No. It isn’t. Names are difficult to remember because they are arbitrary information. And humans are terrible at remembering arbitrary information.

6. How to strengthen your memory

My teacher once said that memory strength is just like muscular strength. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. But you can’t lift the same size weight every day and expect to get stronger. You’ll need to keep your brain constantly challenged. Therefore, learning a new skill is an excellent way to strengthen your brain’s memory capacity.

7. How do you remember people’s names?

Sample 2: Well, there are several ways. First, I would like to write their names on my phone or just on a piece of paper or in my notebook. So that I can check them out, you know when I get time. I bet I will remember this name soon. And there’s another possibility that people will just give me their business cards. Sometimes, they add me as friends and send me their names immediately as messages. Yeah, that’s all helpful.

8. How do you feel when people can’t remember your name?

Sample 3: Um, well, I feel very common. You know, because I always meet this kind of occasion in my life. I just think probably my name is very hard to pronounce for them or I am not pretty enough to make them remember me well. You know, there are a lot of reasons that they cannot remember my name right. so I’m kind of used to this kind of situation.

9. Do you often forget people’s names?

Sample: Well, yes it really happens to me many times. I feel very awkward and embarrassed when I forget my newly made friends’ names or my new classmate’s names. You know, because I think it’s very disrespectful to them, and I think I should have remembered their names. However, I have a really bad memory that’s a big problem.
